Type of dock (charging/non-charging)

@marton
hi
now I’m a bit confused please describe what to expect, preferably pictures as I didn’t see anything about this choice before
“type of dock (charging/non-charging)”

Lock at there Page https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/marton/unfolded-circle-remote-3/description :
Dock 3 comes in two configurations. One with charging capability and one without the charging cradle. The latter is a great choice as a second unit for server racks, where you don’t want to charge the remote but have IR or RS232 devices to control.

So my question Is, how is the remote charged without a charging option? With Qi? Can the remote be charged differently despite the charging station?

I’d think you could just use wireless charging. As the non-charging dock is the same size and I think the same price I just went with two of the charging versions for the one ordered and the free one. If the one in the main room had issues with it’s charging or was looking a little old or something I’d rather have the second one in the rack as a replacement option. Also, seems like one with the charging would be easier to sell if you end up not needing one.

And what argument speaks for the dock without a charging function? They have exactly the same features except for the charging function. So it’s better to get the dock that can do everything if it doesn’t cost more, right?

That was also my thought at first, but I wasn’t sure if there might be a restriction if the dock doesn’t have a charging option.

Some people are going to use a (second) dock as an IR blaster in an AV cabinet, behind doors. A charging groove would just be a dust collector in that case.

I ordered a remote 3 with dock and I’ll get a second dock without charger groove for use in my AV cabinet where my receiver, apple tv, set top box and bluray player are located.

What’s a bit strange that Remote Two owners that can purchase a dock for a discounted price after the campaign will only get the non-charging variant according to Marton on Discord. Yes, it makes sense since you can’t charge Remote Two with it but since it’s the same price why not give these customers a choice as well. Maybe they will change their opinion about this when the new ordering system is ready…

This is because Remote 2 cannot be charged in the Dock 3 groove since the form factor of the remote is different:

The main benefit for Remote 2 users would be improved IR blast function, right?

Yes, this is what I wrote above.
But what if you decide to buy a standalone Remote 3 later (maybe as second hand)? Then you don’t need to buy a dock or have a spare one if one of them doesn’t work anymore.

If the only advantage of the non-charging dock is that it doesn’t collect dust in the trough, then they could have simply included a plug for that. That would have saved them having to produce two different products.

I really don’t see the point of the non-charging dock.

So are multiple docks supported here? I could see myself getting a “charging dock” that I use as a cradle to keep the remote charged as well as an actual dock that I keep in my server rack.

If you mean that multiple docks are connected to a remote then yes. For each IR device you can select which device (remote, dock 1, dock 2) should send the command. The R2 already supports it and I am pretty sure the R3 will do also.

I was also confused. I didn’t read about a charging and non-charging dock. Perhaps I missed it or it was added later.

I can see your argument, but I expect they’re wary of offering a dock which won’t charge a Remote 2 and getting support queries/complaints about it not fitting. Easier to nip that in the bud by only providing a dock which won’t charge any remote.
