So Roon seems to have stabled for me since the 2.0 Beta update.
I have two main pages, “DEVICES” and “ACTIVITIES” as per below:-

Now if I go to DEVICES and select “HiFi”, the Roon integration in its current capacity works - I get album artwork, time and the ability to previous, next, play/pause I expect.
What I cant seem to do on this page is add volume control from my hifi system - I cant see anywhere to add the commands to the hard buttons (this zone is a fixed volume zone in Roon by the way, but this should have nothing to do with this ability).
Alternatively, if I go to the ACTIVITIES page and select “Listen to Roon”, I get the same screen with artwork but I also get VOL UP and DOWN in this scenario. What I seem to lose is the ability to previous/next/play/pause.
I really want both methods to give me BOTH the control over the media AS WELL as the volume up/down on hard buttons. It seems as I have mine set up that it split across two different parts of the remote.
Any advice to fix would be appreciated.
It would be helpful to understand what device(s) are used for „Hifi“ and „Listen to Roon“.
My Innuos Zen Mk3 is the the Roon Server, connected via USB to my T+A DAC200 (which is called “HiFI” in this system.
For „Hifi“ under devices are you using the IR remote of the T+A or the Roon integration or something else?
Same question for „listen to Roon“: what entities are included in the activity?
“HiFi” is part of the Roon integration - when you set up the integration, it finds anything either hard-wired to the Roon core (in this case, my DAC200 via USB) or connectable via ethernet (I also have a Wiim Pro Plus and MacBookPro as options).
So "HiFi’ is a device that only shows up as part of the integration, not a standalone device, does that make sense?
I do have the DAC200 (which Roon sees as HiFi) setup as IR (learned commands) so in the activity “Listen to Roon”, I can get the volume to work, but not the Roon controls of course.
Understood. Try changing the volume control (in device setup in Roon) for the T+A to „device control“ . This should allow you to change the volume via the Roon integration.
In the activity, include both the Roon integration and the IR remote for the T+A as entities. This will allow you to assign commands from both entities to the buttons in the activity.
Brilliant!
So I managed to get all the functions I was missing, working in the activity thanks to your advice. Much appreciated.
I have changed the setting in Roon to “Device Volume” for HIFI (T+A) but I still cant get volume to work when selecting HiFi from the device page.
If I change my Wiim to “Device Volume” inside Roon and select it from the DEVICES list, I can see that the hard volume keys change the volume in Roon as expected. This isnt how I want to use this either of course, preferring the DAC’s own volume to take control, so I’m not sure how to override the integration controlling all of the hard button keys?
When using the Roon integration standalone like in your „Hifi“ configuration, I don‘t believe there is a way to override any buttons.
I would just use Roon with an activity where you can configure evrrything as you like. In case you did not know you can also include the album cover view in an activity by adding a media component to one of the pages.
Yes the Media shows up in the activity as expected.
The downside to relying only on the Activity is there is no easy way to switch Zones that I can see in there (which is why I use the DEVICES page a lot), hence why having volume control working in HIFI for example in the DEVICES menu would be ideal, because it means someone could pick up the remote and from the DEVICES list, choose either zone and not have to switch screens just to change volume.
Mmm. Maybe, adding all zones in the same activity might be an option, but not sure.
When changing to device control you can change the volume in the integration for the Wiim but not the T+A? Maybe there is a setting in the T+A that needs to be changed. Btw, my understanding of device control is that you are using the volume control of the hardware (i.e. your Wiim/ T+A): https://help.roonlabs.com/portal/en/kb/articles/audio-setup-basics#Volume_Control_Mode
Just saw the DAC200 is roon tested but not roon ready. That might be the reason why the integration cannot control the volume of the DAC.
Yes I know that the T+A isnt Roon Ready and that the issue was always going to be Remote Two-related.
I was just hoping there was an ability in the configuration software where you could choose volume control via IR with the Roon integration as most stereo amplifiers would be controlled this way.
Seems like this remote could do it considering I have it working the way I would like in the ACTIVITY, but judging by the track record of the designers, I doubt they will ever fix or modify this behaviour.
Thanks again @heimspielvier
