On AppleTV I get cover art on the screen of whatever is playing. For the Shield all I get is the app icon and run time (albeit not even remotely accurate). Is there something I can turn on to get comparable meta data?
It works indirectly: create a new activity, add Shield, add media control element; displays duration, title, etc.
On Android TV (Shield) only very few Apps are publishing media info. In Germany I only found ZDF for now.

Kodi integration for Remote Two and 3 Integration by Albinator on Github is what I use on my Shield to show the media artwork etc - just follow the install instructions. Especially after Hint for saving battery life section on a macro button to initialise the media entity. Only works for Kodi though - I haven’t tried on other apps within the Shield eg Apple TV
I looked into the integration and I wasn’t even getting an app icon or runtime. I reconfigured it with: Google Play Metadata, and Google Cast Support. I now have the run time and app icon. This seems to be the only option to get a bit more meta data, according to AI its a limitation of the provider not the integration or coding.
How to Improve Metadata Pulling
You can potentially pull more data by enabling Google Cast support within your integration settings:
Enable Google Cast: In the Remote 3 Web Configurator, go to your Android TV integration settings. There is an optional Google Cast feature that can be toggled on.
What it adds: When enabled, the remote uses the Cast protocol to “peek” into what is playing. This can sometimes retrieve media information (titles/artwork) and enable seeking bars that the standard remote protocol lacks.
Limitations: Even with Cast enabled, success is app-dependent. Apps must support the standard Google Cast metadata fields to show up correctly on your media tile.
Note: Even with this enabled, some apps (like Netflix) aggressively block metadata sharing for privacy reasons, but it should significantly improve the experience for YouTube and Spotify.
It is a limitation of the Apps. It is possible but less than a handful make use of it. There are some integrations for Apps which offer everything. I like Kodi on any system with the Kodi integration.
