Newbie HA Question

… but you are correct that right now it‘s not being found in HACS…

Hi Markk,

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!!!

That worked!!! Although I’m a retired software engineer I am not a Linux person nor a HA person. The ONLY reason i wanted HA is to control a device in my home theater that doesn’t have a full power off switch. So i have a Wi Fi switch that is controlled by Google Home and I was able to set that up in HA but until today could not get R2 to control it.

Two curiosity questions if you don’t mind. First why was the UC repository not showing up in the HACS search? And lastly was this procedure to go through the repository installation into HA always needed to get R2 to talk to HA? From what I saw it seemed that all you would have to do is to pull in the integration from within R2 and that would have been it.

AGAIN, THANK YOU VERY VERY MUCH!!!

Gerry

Happy it worked! than happy testing

Don‘t know why it doesn‘t show up in the search… but as long as it now works all is fine. Now that it is installed you should find it in HA under integrations…. and you can just use it within HA.
The procedure we used to install the integration only has to be done once…

Markk,

This whole thread was incredibly helpful, and I’m up & running now too.

Thank you.

Tangent: I do understand how there are many ways to solve problems, but I don’t know how this forum in particular has police that say this is a community forum or use a different community forum or expend effort to tell people to change their behavior vs let people help people. I hope I can pay forward in the future.

Rudolpht:

Glad you’re up and running too.

As far as your tangent comment I agree with you 100%!!

Gerry

P. S. I just added several light and fan items that were controlled by Google Home and now are controlled by HA and ultimately controlled by R2. So YES, this thread was VERY HELPFUL!!!

Hi ALL,

I just wanted to say that if you are thinking of adding Home Assistant and you just want to do basic functions like controlling dimmers and/or fans I can HIGHLY recommend HA Green. Other options require you to install HA on the hardware which can become a complicated procedure. HA Green is literally plug and play. The hardware is all set up and HA is preinstalled although it will need to be updated to the latest version. Granted there were still some not-so-simple steps to get R2 to talk to HA but that would be the same on any HA platform. At least with HA Green once its up and running you can concentrate on getting R2 to talk to HA rather than spend a lot of time just getting HA to run at all.

Good luck to future R2 to HA users!

Gerry

Gerry,

I completely agree. Despite having to restart HA Green and reimage when I went astray with an SDcard (simple), I’m impressed. With the help here on the forum to get HACS to install, the JackJPowell repository added, and finally successfully adding Unfolded Remote AND successfully doing the HA Remote Integration using the explicit IP in the integration entry.

I think it is unfortunate to have to buy a new router and HA Green on top of the Remote Two(s), it is starting to become more useful with many hours of patience. With a specific easy to load remote specific library of icons, and a Unfolded Circle library of remotes that can grow, it would be much more satisfying.

Rudolpht:

Why did you have to get a new router? My router is the standard one issued by Frontier cable in the Tampa, FL area. I do have a network switch right in with my home theater stuff and the R2 hub is directly wired to the switch thus avoiding having to set up the hub for Wi Fi. And so far (after a LOT of initial frustration!) things are working nicely.
