Hi thanks for allowing me to ask a few questions about the Remote3
Let me introduce where I am at
I had Control4 for 10 years. The killer feature of that system were the robust remotes and touchscreens. The downside was the dealer only model to update them.
My current set up is Home assistant - which I built from scratch after watching the Control4 set up build, then ditching it after the dealer only model drove me crazy. For those of you that used to be on C4Forums I was wappinghigh (aka wap) who was bullied off that forum for calling them out…
Anyway I am super happy and comfortable controlling and self programming everything now with Home assistant. I currently use 2x Harmony Elites with their blaster hubs and also 1x Broadlink in a different cupboard. All fired by automations and scripts running from home assistant and their carious integrations within the HA platform. But I miss the functionality of the old C4 touchscreens and remotes… hence stumblng on this forum and product
My question is will the R3 basically perform everything the Broadlink RM4 Pro and Harmony Elite will do in the one device? And is the R3 for me? thanks!
If you use HA and can control everything you like and if you can write scrips for HA then it should be able to fulfill all your wishes.
At the moment the following direct integrations, beside generic IR, are available:
One interesting integration for Harmony is still in development. With this integration you should be able to import all devices and activities from one or more Harmony hubs into the Remote 2/3.
The Control 4 Neeo was a former kickstarter project. I own the original Neeos and they are quite limited compared to the R2/R3. I do not know what happened after Neeo was bought by Control 4.
^ That’s pretty cool… thanks for the quick reply How long do you think is the “import Harmony” integration from reality? Are we talking weeks? Or months? Cheers
Second question. How easy is it to damage that LED/LCD? TS on the R3 (and R2 for that matter) with a “drop”? Is that screen easy to replace? Parts?
It is a community project so hard to tell. I have a really special case with 5 active hubs and it already imports all devices but only activities from 2 hubs. I have a good feeling about the project. If you think that the R3 will be send around end of 2024 there is much time to optimize it.
R2 is OLED an my dropped 2 times from around 60-70cm and survived but I read other post it broke but afaik it could be repaired. In the mean time I printed a protective cover for 1 remote. R3 will have some kind of LCD but only the team might know how it behaves when dropped.
This will definitely help in the transition. We use Harmony remotes here, but the Elite is slowly dying so was able to jump on the Remote 3 Kickstarter (was on the waitlist for the 2). So the ability to just import the Harmony stuff into the remote, and get it working quickly will help.
Then I’m sure I’ll upgrade control to all the IP based stuff (using HA or the remote components, depending).
You asked about durability. I can’t attest to what actually happens if you drop it. But I can say that the R2 felt slippery to me. I wound up putting nubby tape around the cover to gain some tactile traction, and that helped a lot.
I’d be nervous about letting young children near mine. My 2c. JV
