has anyone tried to use a hidden wifi SSID for the connection? My system isn’t logging any associations when trying to set up the remote, and I’m not sure if that’s the problem or we’re just stumbling over something else here.

Well, judging from the log files, it really doesn’t consider trying to connect to a hidden network:
