Howdy, folks. I’ve been using my R2 with an Nvidia ShieldTV, the Android TV integration and Kodi. A while ago, instead of the ‘select’ (center) button pulling up the function menu at the bottom of the Kodi screen, it functions strictly as a pause/play button with a progress bar at the top. This makes it very hard to access functions such as subtitles or language preferences. Is there a way to change it back?
Bump. Still need help on this one.
This is how mine is configured:
Hmmm… I don’t have ‘Shield Bluetooth’ in my Android TV integration. How did you get that?
ETA: I do have ‘cursor enter’, but that brings up the scan bar at the top of Kodi, rather than the control bar at the bottom where we can navigate to settings for audio and closed captioning. I have to use Yatse on my cellphone to manage that, which was not necessary before a number of months ago.
This is what I get when I hit the center button:
This is what I used to have:
In the web configurator:
Entities → +Add new
This takes you to Add new device
Choose Bluetooth and configure for Nvidia Shield
This is a separate entity (virtual remote) from the Android TV integration
Make sure you have Bluetooth enabled in Settings → Wifi & Bluetooth
Not seeing ‘entities → add new’ anywhere, searching for a new integration does not show ‘virtual remote’ or ‘bluetooth’. I do have WiFi & BT on.
You’re on the old last stable firmware which is over a year old.
You need to install the latest Beta firmware. This will enable Bluetooth to be turned on.
I can’t remember as I did this a long time ago, but you may have to allow Beta firmware updates in settings and restart the remote.
Despite the name, the Beta releases have all been very stable. It will also give you the new configurator which is superior to the old.
There is nothing actually called ‘virtual remote’. The entity acts like a remote and will show a remote icon when installed.
Thanks for your help!
I finally got back to figuring this out. Managed to update the firmware to Beta version, added an entry for BT as ‘Generic Android’ and paired successfully, but not quite getting the buttons to work properly in the activity. Instead of working as expected, it keeps pulling up the Shield settings (gear icon) menu. Do I need to also configure the button mapping in the ShieldTV BT entity for this to work?
It’s all a bit confusing about what works, when, and now.
My Shield button mapping in my Watch Shield activity:
Some of the long press commands are for testing purposes. The long press Play/Pause is essential for Kodi on the R2. There is no Stop button on the R2 and I don’t have an R3!
Thanks so much for posting this! It looks like I can configure buttons either in the BT Entity, or in the ‘Movies’ (usin ShieldTv) activity. Which should I be using?
As you can see, I prefer Bluetooth for most things.
Though I do use the Android TV integration for Context_menu on the long press OK button.
The beauty of the R2/R3 is you can mix and match integrations within an activity to control a specific device.
Experiment and see which protocol works best for you on the commands you need.
You must mention that Kodi in Android TV only works very good with Joystick device disabled in Kodi. I prefer Android TV because no disconnect/reconnect messages and larger range. I can start my Shield activity in second floor from the first floor with a lot of steel/concrete in the way. My Harmonies did not even work on the same floor.
