Play/Pause toggling when there's no play/pause toggle

The remote has play and pause on the same key, and it’s common for some devices to implement a single button for play/pause, but my cable box doesn’t have such a beast. It has separate play and pause buttons. How are you all dealing with the play/pause issue? I currently have Play configured as a short press of the Play/Pause button and Pause configured as the long press. This works, but it’s somewhat clumsy as my family doesn’t think to hold the button for pause.

With IR PRONTO codes you can separate two codes with a pipe (|), save this as a new command and the remote will automatically toggle between them. Unfortunately I haven’t found a solution for IP or Bluetooth without using an external Home automation system.

Why not make play and pause individual buttons on the touchscreen to make it easy for the family to understand?

I can do that but, perhaps ironically, that would be more confusing for such non-techie people like them (and by them I really mean my wife – the kids would get it). They see the play/pause button and (rightfully so) assume that that’s where each function lives.

I have all the confidence in our wives to be able to handle that level of complexity. Trust me I’m in the same boat. But if she can figure out the basics of a phone she can do this too. Otherwise we need to take her drivers license away too.

In truth, it’s not the complexity that gets her, it’s the fact that she seeks any excuse to stop using these “damn universal remotes.” So I’ll hear “I’ll never remember to look up there for the pause button” once a week. Better to find keep the peace and find a play/pause toggle, if possible. For her sake, but mainly mine.
