Anybody know if the volume buttons can permanently 100% of the time be set to 1 device?

A comment from Marton on Discord when I wrote about not being able to customize the ui navigation and integration button mappings outside of activities:

At least not yet[…]We‘ll add option to re-map buttons on the pages

The way my system is set up now–a Parasound P7 analogue preamp and an a/v proc going through the pre in theater bypass mode, I control music volume and movie volume with different devices, so what the OP is asking for won’t work for me. With my Harmony (an older one, that doesn’t do lights) I am in the appropriate activity so the volume always works as long as I stay in it. I assume I’ll be able to figure out how to do all this on the R2 eventually. Also, looking forward to being able to integrate my Philips Hue lights with it.

Occasionally, I do have to step out of an activity to control a device in a way not configured in the activity. If I forget I had done that, it can happen that I go for the volume control and it doesn’t work. It’s almost inevitable for this to happen to me, with any advanced universal remote, no matter how it’s configured.

My remote just shipped! So I should be able to contribute to and learn from these threads as an actual user soon.

I came here searching for the same answer. I understand how if you add your receiver to an activity, you can set the vol up/down and mute hard buttons. But in a device screen, evidently, you can’t use those buttons at all (i.e. my DVD player doesn’t have volume controls).

But here’s a solution, I believe: do an IR learn for your receiver as a new command within each device (i.e. import the volume commands into the devices that don’t natively have volume control). (Alternatively, maybe you can copy and past the IR code).

Not the most elegant of solutions…

Just reprogram the volume button to the receiver. Probably takes 5 minutes.

The feature that some buttons like volume work outside of running activities was introduced in one of the last updates. I also noticed this and as far as I know it was not even mentioned in the release notes. At the time of writing this post it was not yet possible.

I can’t find this in de web configurator. Where should I look?

There is no settings for this. The mapping outside of activities works automatically if a media player is in a currently running activity.

Not for me. When I am in the Room/Home screen and I press volume up I see a big + sign but nothing happens. All my activities and all my devices work with the volume buttons of my amplifier but not in the home screen. It would be great to be able to assign the volume buttons on all screens to the amp.

Is the activity running when you press the volume button? Do you have multiple media player entities in you activites? As there is no way to define wich media player is used maybe the wrong entity is used for volume control.

Good thinking! I guess what’s going on is that the remote tries to control Roon (won’t work as the software volume is fixed). Any idea how to change the volume control to the amplifier?

EDIT: deleted Roon from activity, restarted the remote and added Roon again: WORKS!

I guess then it’s always the first media player in the list of entities in the activity.
